A Female Body Is Not a Smaller Male Body
The old fitness industry assumption that a woman is just a smaller, lighter version of a man has cost a generation of women their strength, their bone density, and their relationship with their own body. Programming written for male physiology doesn’t account for what actually happens to a woman across decades: the cyclical changes of the reproductive years, the hormonal cliff of perimenopause, the metabolic recalibration of menopause, the accelerated muscle and bone loss that begin in the late thirties and pick up speed every decade after.
My coaching is built around those realities. Every program at Camryn Elyse Fitness is calibrated to where a woman’s body actually is, not where a one-size-fits-all template assumes she should be.

Why Strength Training for Women Is Its Own Discipline
Three biological realities make women’s strength training a distinct field, and they shape every program I write:
Sarcopenia hits earlier and harder
Without intentional strength training, women begin losing muscle mass in their thirties and lose roughly 3-8% per decade after, and that loss accelerates after menopause. The muscle you build now is the muscle that protects your metabolism, your independence, and your quality of life for the next forty years.
Bone density follows estrogen
Estrogen plays a protective role in bone density, and women lose bone mass quickly during the perimenopausal and postmenopausal years. Properly loaded strength training is one of the few interventions that actually builds bone density rather than just slowing its decline.
Hormonal shifts change how you train and recover
Energy, recovery time, joint sensitivity, and even strength output shift across the menstrual cycle and across life stages. Programming that ignores these shifts leaves women feeling broken when they’re actually just being trained at the wrong intensity for the wrong week.
The broader philosophy behind Camryn Elyse Fitness, including how strength, nutrition, and lifestyle coaching fit together for women in midlife, is described in more depth on the Camryn Elyse Fitness homepage.
These aren’t my opinions, they’re the consensus position of organizations like the National Institute on Aging. See the NIA’s research on muscle, bone, and aging in women. >
How I Work With Women in San Diego
Personal Training
Hands-on form coaching, progressive loading, and the kind of attention to detail that you simply don’t get in a group setting or from an app.
Strength Training
This is the muscle-building, bone-loading, posture-correcting work that changes how your body functions and feels. You will get stronger. You will see your body change.
Personal Training for Women Over 40
Programming for women over 40 accounts for these shifts: smarter volume management, prioritized strength work, integrated mobility, and nutrition guidance that supports lean muscle rather than chasing a scale number.
Personal Training for Women Over 50
Programming for women over 50 emphasizes loaded movement done with precision, progressive overload at a pace your body can absorb, and the long-game thinking that makes the difference between aging well and just aging.
Perimenopause Fitness Training
This program respects the recovery shifts your body is going through, prioritizes strength and protein optimization to protect lean mass, and builds in the structure that makes consistency possible even when your hormones are rewriting the rules every week.
Menopause Fitness Training
This program is structured to protect what you have (muscle, bone, joint integrity) and build what you need (strength, capacity, the kind of physical confidence that makes the next thirty years feel like opportunity instead of decline).
Bone Density Training
Bone density training uses compound lifts at intensities calibrated to your current capacity, with form coaching that ensures the load actually reaches the bone tissue rather than getting absorbed by sloppy movement.

What Clients Say
What Makes My Coaching Different

Yoga-Informed Strength Training
Fifteen years of yoga practice and a four-year run as a Registered Yoga Teacher shape every lift I coach. Breath, bracing, and posture are integrated from day one, not bolted on afterward. The result: stronger lifts with less injury risk, better long-term joint health, and a deeper relationship with your own body rather than a fight against it.
Real Credentials, Real Continuing Education
ACE-Certified Personal Trainer (since 2023). Master Certified Health Coach (since 2025). Plus a four-year stint as a Registered Yoga Teacher and a degree from Boston University. Your program reflects current research on female physiology and aging, not what was trendy a decade ago.
Tracked Progress, Honest Conversations
Body composition is tracked monthly. Strength gains are tracked rep by rep through Trainerize. We also check in regularly on the quieter biometrics - sleep, stress, appetite, mood, joint health - because those tell the real story of whether the work is working. If something isn’t progressing the way it should, we adjust. If the format we’re working in isn’t the right fit, I’ll tell you.
Where I Train Clients
The studio sits at 4030B Sports Arena Blvd in San Diego’s Midway district, just minutes from Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Mission Hills, Bay Park, and Mission Valley. Clients also drive in from Hillcrest, Bankers Hill, Balboa Park, North Park, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Little Italy, and Downtown.
For women outside San Diego or with demanding travel schedules, online coaching delivers the same programming structure through Trainerize, with weekly check-ins and form review by video.
The Camryn Elyse Promise
I don’t make guarantees about how many pounds you’ll lift or lose, because every body is different and lasting change isn’t a 12-week sprint. What I do promise:
You’ll be assessed before you’re programmed for. The first sessions establish where your body actually is, not where a template assumes it is.
Your progress will be tracked monthly: body composition, strength benchmarks, and the quieter biometrics like sleep, mood, and joint health.
If at any point the format we’re working in isn’t the right fit, I’ll tell you and we’ll find one that is, even if that means recommending a different coach or service.
What Happens Next
Every coaching relationship starts with a 20-minute phone call. No pitch, no pressure - just a conversation about what you’re looking for, what’s worked and hasn’t worked before, and whether the way I coach is the right fit for what you need.
Strength is a long game. I’ll meet you where you are, and we’ll go from there.
