What Online Personal Training Should Actually Be

The fitness industry has spent a decade flooding the market with “online coaching” that is, honestly, mostly software. You fill out a form, an app generates a program, and a coach you have never spoken to sends a templated check-in every other week. The program was built for a demographic rather than a person. The form coaching does not exist. The accountability evaporates the moment the novelty does.

What I offer is a different thing wearing the same name. Your program is written for you: your training history, your goals, your equipment, your schedule, the shoulder that has never quite been right since 2019. We start with a real conversation. I watch the videos you send of your lifts and write back about what I actually see. Trainerize is how the work gets delivered. It is not the work.

I’m Not Sure Online Training Would Work for Me

Almost every woman who books an intro call about online coaching arrives with some version of this hesitation.

I won’t know if my form is right without someone there

This is the concern I take most seriously, because form genuinely matters. In practice, video catches form issues as reliably as live coaching. You film a set, I watch it repeatedly, at half speed if needed, and write back about what your spine did on rep three. In a live session I get one look.

We also do a Zoom call your first week to cover the key lifts. And honestly, sometimes form worry is nerves rather than a real barrier. Either way, we can talk it through.

I won’t stay accountable without someone watching me

The accountability in personal training does not actually come from physical presence. It comes from the scheduled check-in, knowing someone is going to look at what you did and notice whether you did it.

Weekly check-ins, tracked progressions, and a coach who genuinely reviews your lifts replicate that, and in several ways exceed it. An in-person trainer sees you for the hour you are with them. I see every session you log, every week, including the ones you did alone at 6am.

It is not as effective as training with someone in the room

Strength comes from progressive overload, consistency, and recovery. All three are fully programmable remotely. A personalized program followed consistently, with real coach engagement through Trainerize - messaging, logged lifts, weekly check-ins, feedback you actually apply - beats an unstructured in-person session every single time.

The comparison people imagine is a perfect in-person session versus a mediocre online one. The real comparison is usually a well-designed online program you follow four times a week versus one in-person session a week with no plan for the other six days.

I don’t have the right equipment or a gym

If you are a true beginner, most programs can start with bodyweight work and a set of resistance bands. That is a genuinely small investment and enough to build a real foundation over the first several months.

If you are intermediate or advanced, then it is time for a commercial gym membership or a garage setup. Online coaching plus a commercial gym membership still costs less than one in-person training session a week, let alone the two or three sessions a week you would actually need to progress.

Equipment is a programming variable. It is not a dealbreaker.

I’ve tried online programs before and didn’t stick with it

I believe you, and I think the programs were the problem. Research shows a real human coach produces better adherence and outcomes than an app or a PDF, especially on technically demanding lifts like squats and deadlifts.

Apps fail because they have no relationship and cannot adjust. When life disrupts your week, an app keeps serving the same prescription. I change the plan. Most people do not quit because the program was wrong. They quit because life interrupted and nobody taught them how to come back.

What Online Training Solves That In-Person Cannot

Your schedule is unpredictable

If you are a working professional or a parent with variable demands, a fixed 6pm Tuesday appointment is fragile. One meeting runs long and the session is gone. With a program that lives in your pocket, the workout moves to whenever the day allows. You lose the time slot, not the training.

You need flexibility inside the session itself

In-person sessions are 60 minutes, and that is a real constraint. If you arrive late, or your hip needs fifteen minutes of attention before it will cooperate, something gets cut. Training on your own schedule means you can give the warm-up what it needs and still finish the work.

You travel

The program comes with you. Hotel gym, a friend's garage, a hotel room with nothing but a bed - modifications are straightforward and consistency stops depending on being in one building in one city.

Cost

Online training is meaningfully less expensive than in-person, which for a lot of women is the difference between training with a coach and training alone.

You take ownership of your own fitness

When you are the one loading the bar, counting your own sets, deciding today is the day to add five pounds - something shifts. You start to understand why you are doing what you are doing. You are not following along. You are building the knowledge and the confidence to make good decisions about your own training, which is the thing that actually outlasts any coaching relationship, including mine.

How the Coaching Actually Works

why train with Camryn

A program built from scratch

After a thorough intake, I design your first phase — typically four to eight weeks — from nothing. Every exercise, set, rep, and progression is a decision I made about your situation. Sessions arrive in Trainerize with video demonstrations and coaching notes throughout.

Weekly video form review

You film short clips of your lifts during the week. I send back specific written feedback — sometimes video — on bar path, bracing, where position breaks down, what to prioritize next. This is the piece most online coaching quietly omits, and it is the difference between progress and a slow accumulation of habits that will need undoing later.

Weekly Feedback

You send me a written check-in each week, and I respond with written feedback. Calls are absolutely welcome, and if you want a longer call, we will schedule it.

Unlimited messaging

Between calls you can reach me through Trainerize without limit. Substitution questions, a quick form check, a heads-up that you are traveling, a bad week you want to talk through. It gets answered.

What Clients Say

The Hybrid Option for San Diego Clients

If you are local, there is a middle path. The hybrid package is online coaching plus one in-person session per month at the Sports Arena Blvd studio. That session is in addition to everything standard in online coaching, not a replacement for it.

An hour in the same room does some things efficiently: pressure-testing a heavy lift, working through what is not translating on video, and talking through your program face to face. For women who want online flexibility with periodic hands-on coaching, this is usually the right answer.
