What 1:1 Personal Training Actually Looks Like
There are personal trainers who count reps and personal trainers who coach. The first kind treats sessions like supervised workouts - pleasant, sweaty, vaguely satisfying, and largely interchangeable. The second kind treats sessions like the hour where your relationship with your body and your training actually changes. The work I do with 1:1 clients is firmly the second kind.
Every session is built around your specific body, the imbalances we identified in your assessment, the lifts we’re progressing toward in this phase, the parts of your week that are working and not working, the way you’re sleeping and recovering, the small adjustments that compound over months into the strength and confidence you’re actually here for.
You aren’t getting a workout. You’re getting coaching.

Inside a 1:1 Personal Training Session
The structure of every session reflects the same four pillars that shape my coaching philosophy across the board:
Personalized warm-up and movement prep
Five to ten minutes of mobility, activation, and breath work targeted to your specific restrictions and the work we’re doing that day. This is not a generic five-minute jog and arm circles. It’s the deliberate preparation that makes your big lifts move better and your joints feel better afterward.
Phased, progressive strength work
Compound lifts - squats, deadlifts, presses, rows, pull-ups, loaded carries - progressed over weeks and months in deliberate phases. We track every lift through Trainerize, so you can see the trajectory of your strength over time rather than wondering whether anything is happening.
Hands-on form coaching and real-time feedback.
The thing you can’t get from an app or a group class. I see what your spine is doing under load, what your knees are doing in your squat, where your shoulders are migrating in your press, and I correct in the moment. Form quality is what makes the difference between strength training that protects your body for decades and strength training that breaks it.
Integrated mobility and recovery work
Rather than treating mobility as a separate thing you should be doing on your own time (and probably aren’t), I weave it into every session. The result: better positions in your lifts, more available range of motion, and joints that hold up to the work.
These pillars aren’t exclusive to 1:1 training, they shape every program I run, in every format. The full philosophy behind Camryn Elyse Fitness, including how 1:1 training fits alongside group, online, and hybrid options, is described on the main personal trainer San Diego page.
The science behind progressive resistance training is unusually clear, and the American College of Sports Medicine published its first major update to the resistance training guidelines in 17 years in 2026. Read the ACSM 2026 resistance training guidelines summary The short version: any consistent resistance training meaningfully improves health, strength adaptations come from heavier loads, and individualization matters more than chasing complicated protocols.

8-session package

12-session package

Most clients train two or three times per week, which is consistent with the federal guidelines on minimum strength training frequency for adults. The 8 and 12-session packages are designed around that cadence.
Every package includes:
- An initial movement and posture assessment to identify imbalances, restrictions, and starting points
- Phased strength programming designed around your goals, training history, and life context
- Hands-on form coaching during every session
- Hybrid programming through Trainerize, a full week of training built out for you, not just the days I see you in person
- Strength and progress tracking through Trainerize, so you can see the data underneath the work
- Unlimited messaging through Trainerize for questions, form check videos, and program adjustments between sessions
Who 1:1 Personal Training Is Right For
You’re Returning to Strength Training After Time Away
Whether the gap has been months or decades, returning to lifting after time off requires deliberate re-entry. The first weeks back determine whether you build a sustainable practice or wreck a joint and quit. 1:1 training gives you the assessment, the form coaching, and the deliberate progression to come back smart.
You’re Newer to Strength Training
If you’ve done classes, treadmills, or trendy fitness formats but never really lifted, 1:1 is the fastest way to build the foundation. You learn the patterns properly, you get hands-on cueing while the movements are still being built into your body, and you skip the years of self-taught form errors that haunt people who learned to lift from videos.
You’re Navigating Injury, Pain, or Postural Issues
Existing aches, old injuries, postural compensations, or hyper-mobile/hypo-mobile patterns all require attention that group programming can’t provide. In 1:1, we can build around what your body is doing now and progress from there safely.
You Want the Fastest Possible Progress
Per session, 1:1 is the highest-density coaching you can get. Every minute is yours, every cue lands on your body, and the program adjusts in real time. If your goal is to make the most strength progress in the shortest amount of time, this is the format that does it.
What Makes My Coaching Different

Yoga-Informed Strength Training
Fifteen years of yoga practice and a four-year run as a Registered Yoga Teacher shape how I coach every lift.
Breath, bracing, and posture are integrated from day one, not bolted on afterward.
The result: stronger lifts with less injury risk and better long-term joint health.
Real Credentials, Real Continuing Education
ACE-Certified Personal Trainer (since 2023). Master Certified Health Coach (since 2025). Plus a four-year stint as a Registered Yoga Teacher and a degree from Boston University.
Your program reflects current research on strength training, female physiology, and aging - not what was trendy a decade ago.
Tracked Progress, Honest Conversations
Body composition is tracked monthly.
Strength gains are tracked rep by rep through Trainerize. We also check in regularly on the quieter biometrics - sleep, stress, appetite, mood, joint health - because those tell the real story of whether the work is working.
What Clients Say
Where I Train Clients
All 1:1 personal training takes place at 4030B Sports Arena Blvd in San Diego’s Midway district, just minutes from Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Mission Hills, Bay Park, and Mission Valley.
Clients also drive in from Hillcrest, Bankers Hill, Balboa Park, North Park, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Little Italy, and Downtown.
Parking is straightforward, and the location was chosen specifically so a 60-minute session doesn’t turn into a 90-minute commitment.
The Camryn Elyse Promise
I don’t make guarantees about how many pounds you’ll lift or lose, because every body is different and lasting change isn’t a 12-week sprint. What I do promise:
You’ll be assessed before you’re programmed for. The first sessions establish where your body actually is, not where a template assumes it is.
Your progress will be tracked monthly: body composition, strength benchmarks, and the quieter biometrics like sleep, mood, and joint health.
If at any point 1:1 isn’t the right format for you - if your schedule, budget, or goals are better served by another option - I’ll tell you and we’ll find one that fits.
