Eat for Performance, and Aesthetics Will Follow

Most women have spent decades being sold the wrong nutrition advice. Eat less. Cut carbs. Skip breakfast. Try this cleanse. Drink this shake. Aim for the smallest body you can sustain on the fewest calories you can stomach. The result, predictably, has been a generation of women who are simultaneously underfed and undermuscled — chronically tired, metabolically blunted, and convinced their body is the problem when the actual problem is the protocol.

Nutrition coaching at Camryn Elyse Fitness starts from a different premise. The goal isn’t the smallest version of you. The goal is the strongest, most energized, most metabolically resilient version of you — the one with enough lean muscle to fuel the next forty years. Body composition follows. Body confidence follows. The aesthetics, when they come, are a byproduct of being well-fed and well-trained, not the prize at the end of a starvation contest.

Why Nutrition and Strength Training Belong in the Same Conversation

Strength training without adequate fuel is a half-built program. The work you do under the barbell only translates into actual muscle when the protein is there to support synthesis, the calories are there to support recovery, and the daily habits are there to make consistent intake possible. Three principles drive how I coach nutrition:

Z

Protein is the non-negotiable

Research consistently shows that women in midlife and beyond need significantly more protein than the standard RDA suggests: closer to 1.0–1.2g per kilogram of body weight per day to actually preserve and build muscle. Protein optimization is the first lever I pull, before any conversation about cutting calories.

Z

Calories matter, but quality and timing matter too

How much you eat shapes weight; what and when you eat shape body composition, energy, sleep, and how you feel showing up to your training. Getting these dialed in is more useful than chasing a number on a scale.

Z

Habits beat plans

Meal plans fall apart by week three. Habits — protein at every meal, planning instead of grazing, eating enough at breakfast — compound for years. Nutrition coaching here is built around the small, repeatable behaviors that hold up to real life.

Nutrition is one piece of a larger picture. The way I think about strength, recovery, sleep, stress, and the daily habits that move the needle together are described in more depth on the main Camryn Elyse Fitness website.

If you want to read the underlying research on protein and muscle health for women in midlife, the NIH-published review on protein and muscle health during aging is a useful place to start.

How Nutrition Coaching Works at Camryn Elyse Fitness

Nutrition Coaching

The flagship nutrition service. A three-month minimum commitment for new nutrition clients (because real change happens on a longer timeline than a 30-day reset), with weekly food log review through MyFitnessPal, four 30-minute coaching calls per cycle, and unlimited messaging support through Trainerize. We start with a thorough nutrition and lifestyle assessment, set personalized calorie and macro targets, and then iterate based on what your body and your life are actually doing.

Macro Coaching

Macro coaching is the practical engine inside nutrition coaching. Rather than handing you a meal plan to follow or a list of foods to avoid, we work with personalized targets for protein, carbohydrates, and fat. You learn how to hit those targets with the foods you already like, in the cooking patterns that already fit your life. Over time, the structure becomes intuitive, and you carry the skill of fueling yourself well for the rest of your life.

Body Composition Coaching

Body composition is the conversation that matters. The number on the scale tells you almost nothing about the body you actually have, while body composition — lean mass, fat mass, distribution — tells you almost everything. Body composition coaching pairs monthly body composition tracking with the strength training and nutrition adjustments that move muscle up and fat down. The work is slower than crash dieting and far more durable, because you’re building the body you want rather than shrinking the one you have.

Sustainable Weight Management

Weight management is a real goal for many of my clients — but the way it’s usually pursued is the reason it usually fails. Restrict-rebound cycles are ruinous for muscle, metabolism, and self-trust. Sustainable weight management here is built around adequate protein, strength training that protects lean mass while body fat shifts, modest and gradual calorie adjustments, and the lifestyle habits (sleep, stress, alcohol, daily movement) that determine whether the work actually holds. You won’t lose ten pounds in two weeks. You will build a body and a relationship with food you can live with for thirty years.

Personalized Nutrition Plan

Every client gets a personalized nutrition plan, but “personalized” here means something specific. It doesn’t mean a printed-off menu of approved meals. It means calorie and macro targets calibrated to your current body composition, training intensity, age, life stage, and goals — plus practical guidance on protein distribution across the day, carbohydrate timing around training, and the nutritional priorities that change as women move through perimenopause and menopause. The plan adjusts as you progress, because what worked at month one isn’t the same thing your body needs at month four.

What Clients Say

What Makes the Coaching Different

Camryn_elyse_fitness_for_woman

Nutrition and Training in the Same Place

Nutrition and strength training shape each other. When the same coach is watching both — the food logs and the lift numbers, the protein intake and the recovery quality, the calorie target and the stress load — the adjustments happen faster and the results compound more reliably. Nutrition coaching at Camryn Elyse Fitness is offered specifically as an add-on to 1:1 In-Person Strength Training or Online Personal Training, because that’s where it actually moves the needle.

Real Credentials, Honest Scope

Master Certified Health Coach (since 2025) and ACE-Certified Personal Trainer (since 2023). I am not a Registered Dietitian (RD), and I don’t practice medical nutrition therapy or treat clinical conditions. What I do practice is evidence-based nutrition and behavior coaching for healthy adults pursuing strength, body composition, and lifestyle goals. If a client’s situation calls for clinical nutrition support — a diagnosed eating disorder, a medical condition that requires therapeutic dietary management, or anything else outside my scope — I refer out. That’s how scope of practice should work.

Habit Coaching, Not Diet Plans

The habit coaching side of nutrition is where most of the real change happens. Weighing your protein once doesn’t change you; building the habit of planning protein into every meal does. Tracking your macros for one week doesn’t change you; learning to estimate them by eye over six months does. Most of my coaching is structured around the small, repeatable behaviors that, layered over time, become how you actually live.

Where Group Sessions Happen

Nutrition coaching is delivered remotely through Trainerize (food logs, messaging, and program tracking) and MyFitnessPal (daily food logging), with 30-minute coaching calls held by phone or Zoom. That means clients anywhere can access the coaching, though most of my nutrition clients are also doing in-person training at the Sports Arena Blvd studio in San Diego’s Midway district — minutes from Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Mission Hills, Bay Park, Mission Valley, Hillcrest, Bankers Hill, North Park, and the surrounding neighborhoods.

The Camryn Elyse Promise

I don’t make guarantees about how many pounds you’ll lift or lose, because every body is different and lasting change isn’t a 12-week sprint. What I do promise:

No restrictive plans, food rules, or eliminations beyond what your body actually needs. Coaching is built around what you can sustain, not what looks good in a marketing photo.

Your progress will be tracked monthly across body composition, training metrics, and the daily habits we’re working on. You’ll always know whether the work is working.

Honest scope. If your situation calls for clinical nutrition support I can’t provide, I’ll tell you and refer you to someone who can.

Every coaching relationship starts with a 20-minute phone call. No pitch, no pressure — just a conversation about what you’re looking for, what’s worked and hasn’t worked before, and whether nutrition coaching paired with training is the right starting point for what you need.

Strength is a long game. Nutrition is the same. I’ll meet you where you are, and we’ll go from there.
